In early January 2023, NightShift Street Ministries received an email informing our team that we were to be the recipients of a Surrey RCMP Officer-in-Charge Award, a certificate commending our team for outstanding service and dedication to helping the marginalized community in Surrey.
Several members of NightShift’s staff congregated at the Surrey West Main Detachment on a chilly February afternoon to gratefully accept this award. None of us expected the number of RCMP officers that participated in the ceremony, sharing with us their gratitude and appreciation for NightShift’s work in the community.
MaryAnne Connor, NightShift’s Founder and President, and Keri Vermeulen, NightShift’s Executive Director, shared stories about our experiences working with vulnerable men and women in the neighbourhood throughout the years. We even recounted the many times where NightShift worked closely with RCMP’s PMHOT Team (police mental health outreach team). The comradery we experienced through these shared stories, whilst working toward a common purpose was nothing short of heartwarming.
We were reminded on this day about the importance of community organizations working together as a team in order to best serve our friends in need. We didn’t just leave with an award, but rather with a sense of unity and peace, recognizing that we are all working together for the good of others.
