The miracle and magic of Christmas comes alive every year at NightShift Street Ministries’ annual sit-down Christmas Dinner. Volunteers, supporters, and staff come together to share a full turkey dinner, along with a side helping of hope, peace, love and joy with almost 200 of our friends from the street, who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, addiction and mental illness.
Together, we share a home-style meal shoulder to shoulder with men and women in our community who may not have a place to belong during the Christmas season. We hand out and wrap up toys for those who have kids and might not be able to afford a Christmas present as well. This is always met with immense gratitude and appreciation.
Although our Christmas Dinners started in 2018, we couldn’t resist sharing a Christmas 2022 photo of our friend Gord, enjoying a piping hot plate of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries and veggies. This Christmas, Gord was smiling extra wide having spent the evening among friends and being able to provide his daughter with a special gift.
In the time since this photo was taken, we haven’t seen much of Gord. He is no longer staying in the local shelter, and we have heard he is working and has a place of his own! We are grateful for the kind impact he had on our community through his kindness, his sense of humour and his positive attitude.
Gord reminds us of the impact that each person has on our lives as they get involved in our community. People who start out as strangers quickly become friends and change our lives for the better.
