I invite you to take a moment to remember those we have lost and those who have survived…
Below is another story of one of our street friends, Sara (name changed to protect her identity), who for months was sleeping outside our building.
In her 50s, she had become separated from her family because of addiction and was navigating life without a home. During that time, she started visiting the our NightShift Street Ministries Welcome Centre, where staff and volunteers got to know her through countless conversations about her struggles and her hopes for the future.
Day after day, Sara found a place at NightShift where she was welcomed without judgment. She found warmth, nourishing meals and people willing to listen.
Then one day she said, “I want to go to detox.”
Our team readily connected Sara with a detox centre and she took that courageous next step. Today, Sara is doing well and has been reunited with her family.
Recovery is never easy and every journey is different. But stories like Sara’s remind us that being there for someone can have a lasting impact. At the heart of our holistic care is our mission to love unconditionally and help each other find hope and purpose. And when our street friends find the strength to take the next step, we celebrate.
At the same time, we know that many people in our community continue to face the devastating reality and dangers surrounding substance use.
In 2025 alone, paramedics responded to 3,618 patients in overdose or poisoning situations here in Surrey. Our staff have also intervened in numerous emergencies, helping to save lives and reduce harm among the people we serve.
As we mark International Overdose Awareness Day, we remember those who have lost their lives and the families and friends who continue to carry that loss. We also think of those who are still struggling with addiction, as well as those who are taking courageous steps toward recovery.
