Reaching Out
As a street ministry, our focus in on street and community outreach. NightShift is more than just a soup kitchen; yes, we provide hot meals 365 days a year, but there’s much more to it than that…
During our evening outreach, volunteers serve meals, hand out clothes, blankets and basic care packages; we also offer the opportunity to talk, and if requested, personal prayer. It is a time for personal interaction between our street friends and our volunteers, as we’re all in this together, reaching out to each other.
During the day we offer counselling to anyone in need of a confidential place to share at The Care Centre. In the evenings, we are bringing counselling, basic nursing and recovery options to the streets with our Care Bus.
NightShift is part of the Extreme Weather Response shelter network that operates from November 1 – March 31 in providing emergency sleeping accomodation at our Outreach Centre.
Through Sisters Thrift Boutique we accept and coordinate clothing donations. Sorting teams ensure appropriate clothes and blankets are put aside for our friends in need and that these are given out during our nightly outreach. Clothes suitable for resale are put on display in the store and online, as a way to raise funds for NightShift operations. Suitable clothing donations are also packaged for re-use by other needy causes, and we have helped church groups fill many a container for earthquake and other disaster victims around the world. Nothing goes to waste, all donations are re-used or recycled in a meaningful way.
NightShift relies on volunteers to provide the many outreach and community services that we have developed for a holistic approach to alleviate poverty and homelessness and to offer hope and a renewed sense of purpose for all people. We also encourage youth groups to get involved in any way they can, including helping in the warehouse or organizing clothes drives. If you need volunteer hours, talk to us!
Outreach is about reaching out and involving the community. It is about bringing together people who want to be part of something special.
